The organization looks for opportunities to serve disadvantaged communities wherever it can. When she ran the Nature Conservancy in Louisiana, 200,000 acres were set aside.

It's a very creative town, very community oriented, and the energy there is very supportive. There's a need, the women are responding, and our community is doubling over the last year, so we really are at a point of expansion and scaling. We have such a large community, our network is over 40,000, who is depending on us.

They write poems about their experiences, and when they recite them in community meetings, their neighbors are outraged, and mobilized immediately to action. It is very different to interview sex workers who have been trafficked in Phnom Penh, than to interview women who are doing knitting in Bolivia.

I think my favorite example of that is a women's group from the highlands of Bolivia who wrote to us maybe seven or eight years ago. They were a group of illiterate women who dictated their requests to a priest in the village, who then hand wrote the request. I think the biggest challenge for us is trying to make hard decisions.
