Why Choose Donorbox over Patreon and PayPal?

Many podcasters use Patreon or Paypal to collect donations, but there is another choice, Donorbox, that’s more affordable and offers far more perks.

donation platforms for podcasts

1. Cost

Patreon is a membership-based platform for creators, that has quickly become a popular tool for podcasts, but their fees can quickly cut into your donations. Patreon’s platform fee of 5% (for the lite version) along with the addition of 2.9% +$0.30 processing fee can limit the amount of funds you collect. With higher plans, it goes up to 8% (Pro) and 12%(Premium).

PayPal has a credit card processing fee of 2.9% + 30¢.

Donorbox is free to start with, requiring no monthly fees or contracts. It offers the same processing fee as Patreon, but our 1.5% platform fee makes us the most affordable option out there. On Donorbox, you also have the option to ask your donors to cover the processing fee with a simple checkbox on the donation form. So the total amount of their donation goes to your podcast. You can check the pricing details here on our website.

We have created this pricing table as a comparison between Donorbox, Patreon, and PayPal. Have a look at it for better understanding –

2. Benefits

Patreon and Donorbox use PayPal as their payment processor, so you may be wondering why don’t I just use PayPal instead? That’s a good question, and the answer is what you get in exchange.

PayPal is a trusted online payment system used by millions, but that is where their services stop. Donorbox offers much more.

Here’s a list of benefits of Donorbox over Patreon and PayPal –

  • Recurring intervals – Patreon and PayPal offer monthly recurring payments but with Donorbox, you get monthly, weekly, quarterly, and yearly payments options.
  • Donor platform – With Donorbox, your donors have greater flexibility in terms of managing their recurring donation plans. PayPal won’t let them do that.
  • Customization and branding – Your campaign forms are much more customized and branded with Donorbox. You can ask your donors some essential questions for better communication in the future. With the other two tools, unfortunately, that’s not there.
  • Maximum donations – You can ask donors to cover the processing fee with Donorbox and make the most of your donations. PayPal and Patreon won’t give you that option.
  • Membership levels – Donorbox lets you create multiple membership tiers/levels (suggested amounts and short descriptions) within the simple donation form. It makes your website look neat and crisp. With Patreon, that’s not how it works. Customizability is at its minimum.
  • Donation receipts – You have one-time, recurring, as well as yearly donation receipt options with Donorbox. None of the other two tools will give so much freedom with receipts and their customizations. In fact with PayPal, you cannot send any at all.
  • The quicker, the better – Donorbox recommends its users to use Stripe as their payment processor. With it, the payment is processed instantly and gets deposited into your account. But PayPal (also Patreon since it also uses PayPal) delays the process as the amount goes to its account first and then you have to transfer it to your bank account.
  • Donor managementDonor management and communication are at their best on Donorbox. You have integration options such as Mailchimp, Salesforce, Zapier. Donorbox itself offers you an easy way to maintain and segment your donors within the tool. But PayPal won’t have such options. Neither will Patreon.
  • Boosted donations – You can add a goal thermometer, donor wall, crowdfunding, text-to-give, and company matching features to your campaign form to boost donations and keep your donors engaged for a long time. Neither Patreon nor PayPal will offer so many options and flexibility for you to accept and boost donations.

We have a blog on why many nonprofits choose Donorbox over PayPal. Give it a read here.
