An LMS, or learning platform, is a system that is designed to facilitate some sort of learning process over the web. These include Blackboard , ANGEL , and WebCT (now owned by Blackboard), among others. Some, especially those that are very content/document heavy, have become familiar with Document Management Systems (DMS).
