One of their programs is the Reality Tours, where they bring groups of individuals to regions to look at the social justice issues and other pressing issues, that really color the experience and the culture of a place. So our first exchange that we did with Global Exchange was called "Transformative Advocacy in Bolivia."

I wanted to go out and experience the world, so I went at nineteen years old to the Amazon in Ecuador and ended up working with indigenous women who were struggling because there had been a oil contamination (four times Exxon Valdez) on their traditional lands. Those women asked me to be their messenger.

That was happening as a result of a pernicious rumor, which is floated, essentially, by the traditional healers there, and in other places.

It's long, but I hope you'll take time during your coffee or lunch break to read, or listen to her inspiring words. I think my favorite example of that is a women's group from the highlands of Bolivia who wrote to us maybe seven or eight years ago. They are often in the places where toxic dumps, and other kinds of dumps are housed.
