Unions are usually structured around large national/international organizations that contain smaller local organizations (also known as “locals”). Unions award grants. To accomplish these goals, unions involve themselves in the political process by lobbying the government, participating in campaigns, and donating to candidates.

This week, I participated in the Open Government Workshop , which brought together a group of leaders across the federal government sector. The sessions are designed to develop tactical recommendations for federal agencies developing their open government plans, which are due to be published on April 7.

So, clearly, education-focused nonprofits are pursuing and being awarded private funding from both foundations and corporate giving programs, and may be starting to secure more private funds then institutions. So there are some things like that that you might want to consider, especially if you’re maybe looking into government grants. Some of the funding is going to go to the state’s local government, so just to be mindful of all of those things, especially when you start thinking about what you can do in-house to prepare.
