Song Reader didn''t come as a CD, or an LP, or a bunch of digital audio files. It is what it sounds like: a book of original sheet music, beautifully designed and complemented with artwork and text. Beck''s project is unusual because he deliberately resurrected a mostly-defunct participatory platform: sheet music for popular songs.

The goal was to design an audio tour for people who never do audio tours. The lesson here is a really important one for today, and it’s this: the storytelling ego that’s so important in non-participatory media can be a liability in participatory media. And widely accessible. If none, why the heck not?

From Icommons comes an incredibly useful legal brief to remixing media in the age of participatory media and campaigns by Steve Vosloo, Digital Hero Book Project. s licensing and that of the sound bite? Currently this is only possible with MP3 audio files through embedding of metadata. Sounds of Samba??? more is better???

Many fabulous participatory projects--like the Johnny Cash Project or the Art Gallery of Ontario's " In Your Face "--don't require language. This may sound silly, but there are probably some people who'd be happy to contribute in this way (and may not want to write their own comment). So what are the options?

It is multi-disciplinary, incorporates diverse voices from our community, and provides interactive and participatory opportunities for visitor involvement. This post focuses on one aspect of the exhibition: its participatory and interactive elements. So many museum exhibitions relegate the participatory bits in at the end.

Freedom Fone leverages audio as a mobile function using IVR, a technology that allows a system to detect voice and keyboard input. IVR allows a user to call, enter or say specific numbers, and listen to or contribute audio content. Many of the audio responses were later rebroadcast on the program. .

I’ve long admired Improv Everywhere , the NYC-based participatory public art group. I particularly like the MP3 experiments , events at which Improv Everywhere distribute an audio file to people for free as a podcast. Steve has a deep, fake “god” voice, which makes him sound both benevolent and like someone you want to please.
