This past Friday, we experimented with a new feedback format at an evening event focused on poetry and book arts. Instead, Stacey thought, why not make the feedback experience an activity unto itself? The event involved over fifty artists throughout the building helping visitors make their own paper, write poems, stitch books, etc.

I can't say that any one experience--working on a collage with other visitors, swinging on a hammock, discovering a participatory display for pocket artifacts in the bathroom--directly contributed to increased attendance and giving. They all have in concert, and they build on each other.

We decided to show a selection of Danny's lists in a hallway surrounded by a participatory element where we invite visitors to contribute to new lists on evocative themes ("Things we forget," "The best feelings in the world," etc.) One of the collections on display is a set of "found lists" collected by a local farmer, Danny Lazzarini.

It's a little living room in a lobby area that invites people to lounge on comfortable chairs, leaf through magazines and books related to art and Santa Cruz history, and generally hang out. The area that houses the Creativity Lounge also shows art. Teenagers are curling up with art magazines. People love petting zoos.".

Aren't art museums less open to participation than other kinds of museums?" I was surprised by her question.

We've been offering a host of participatory and interactive experiences at the Museum of Art & History this season. I loved Jasper Visser's list of 30 "do's" for designing participatory projects earlier this month. This isn't even participatory. We had over 400 successful bangers with no injuries.

They give high-energy, interactive tours of the Metropolitan Museum and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). They were “preaching the museum gospel” in NYC via alternative tours at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I imagine that there are a lot more presumed barriers to break down at an art museum than a science museum.

Riding the art couch through downtown Santa Cruz with two visitors and a dog while blasting the Jackson 5 was one of the highlights of my year. We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth.
