We held a free yoga class in the plaza outside the museum and invited artists to come and draw/paint the yoga-doers in motion. For me, Downward Draw provided an unusual opportunity to examine the more casual end of the participatory spectrum. This is the question I've been toying with this week. They asked.

Why the Video Contest Worked Video contests are one of the most challenging kinds of participatory projects to pull off. I'm biased, because she's demonstrating a participatory project, but she was able to "show, not tell" her interest in engaging with people. In general, I liked videos made by artists, but some got overly poetic.

The best way I can really push my own participatory practice and thinking is to operate an institution and work with a community I care about over time. I also believe that small and mid-sized museums are the leaders when it comes to innovation, particularly around participatory engagement. I knew we were moving somewhere nice.

Every other year, they convene TUPAC, a group of 35 outside advisors, including teens, college students, Temple University professors, artists, philanthropists, and community leaders. It’s not unusual for us to meet with an environmental activist, a balloon artist, a farmer, and the Mayor of Santa Cruz all in one day. When planning programs or events, we involve a combination of these groups to share and bridge audiences, bringing big, diverse crowds to new artists and ideas. Large and small (or no) followings.

I don't know what formed the bridge between the artists and the teens in this circumstance. On the third floor, they sat down in our creativity lounge and started making collages.

In April, I gave 13 UW graduate students a simple challenge: make an exhibit that gets strangers to talk to each other.
