Last month, the Japan earthquake and tsunami occurred on March 11th 2011, the first day of the conference. That morning, I saw the jaw-dropping photos and videos from the Japan tsunami disaster. Meanwhile, bloggers Leigh Duncan and Deb Ng were starting a grassroots effort to raise awareness and support for the Japan disaster too.

When talking about active audience engagement with friends in the museum field, I often hear one frustrated question: how can we get adults to participate? We're showing an installation by artist Shelby Graham which features beautiful photographs of butterflies juxtaposed with images of the bombing of Japan in World War II.

We have a great community of learners that ask and answer questions and our videos are being translated by volunteers all over the world. Many museums produce superb lesson plans, curator interviews and artist interviews for the web. We are reminded of how much fun learning can be. But there are other content models we can explore.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. The kind of art I do is art that gets engaged into the public.
