Negotiation" implies a respectful relationship between institution (or artist) and user. Sometimes the negotiation is contested. Sometimes the negotiation can be exploited for artistic means. I read recently about an awesome project at the San Jose Museum of Art in 2001, Collecting Our Thoughts, in which visitors were invited to write the labels for an art exhibition (more another time). But it's a lot of fun, and it could be a great way to construct a personalized takeaway from a museum experience. Pick a plural noun.
