I keep on telling my story of how I moved between the East and West, between physical environments (architecture, urban design) and virtual (web and mobile development and strategy), between technology and the humanities. We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth. Short story: we learned a lot. The lessons I learned from Lost Childhoods are at the heart of the OF/BY/FOR ALL project we're building now. Through Lost Childhoods , we saw youth step into their power. Two years ago, our team at the MAH embarked on our most challenging co-creation project ever.

This month, we opened a new exhibition at the MAH, Lost Childhoods: Voices of Santa Cruz County Foster Youth and Foster Youth Museum (brief video clip from opening night here ). This exhibition is a big accomplishment for us because it incorporates multiple ways we push boundaries at the MAH: we co-designed it with 100+ community partners (C3) , including artists, foster youth, and youth advocates, with youth voices driving the project from big idea to install to programming.

It is open to creators from all backgrounds – from charities to video game developers to artists. Nonprofit Success Story: Ushahidi, a nonprofit headquartered in Kenya, used Kickstarter to launch production of BRCK, a Wi-Fi router and mobile modem built to withstand the elements. Nonprofit Success Story: Indiegogo has a wonderful gallery of campaigns from verified nonprofits, but I especially like this campaign from Give2 Asia.

When I think of story telling, I think of books. The Little Golden books from my childhood, non-fiction books that revolutionized my perspective of the world and novels that I rarely take the luxury of reading. Stories surround us on the radio, in newspapers, in our music boxes, in short web videos and on large screens in movie theatres. I am a documentary filmmaker and video journalist, and I think of my work as a form of story telling and documenting.

The common museum knowledge on this issue is that adults are timid, that we have lost some of the wonder, impulsiveness, and active creativity of childhood days. We're showing an installation by artist Shelby Graham which features beautiful photographs of butterflies juxtaposed with images of the bombing of Japan in World War II. Share your story with other visitors. Then there are lots of blank butterflies on which you can write your story and then pin it to the wall.

The ASTC (the Association of Science and Technology Centers) annual meeting is coming up in LA (home of my childhood), and Museum 2.0 Created by artists David and Diana Wilson, it is an homage to the curiosity cabinet of yore, a place where the grotesque, the imaginary, and the unfamiliar intermingle. Exhibits range from oil portraits of the Soviet space program dogs to immersive stories about scientists who may have existed to failed dice to letters sent to the Mt.

It doesn’t just group artists together and play music by similar musicians. For example, this image explains why The Tide is High was included: There are over 400 different tags used to relate songs in the Music Genome Project, ranging from “brisk swing feel” to “lyrics that tell a story” to “sparse tenor sax solo.”

Each secret can be a regret, hope, funny experience, unseen kindness, fantasy, belief, fear, betrayal, erotic desire, feeling, confession, or childhood humiliation. But in this project, each artist is uniquely powerful because they give voice to something vital, something easy for viewers to access emotionally. As Frank said, 4 by 6 inches is not enough space to explain an entire story. And then there are the unusual stories.
