On January 12, 2010, I didn't personally experience the major earthquake that hit Haiti, but I was forever changed by it. In the midst of the viral Text HAITI to 90999 message, we saw the emergence of what we're calling emergency social data, or #crisisdata. Melissa Eliott was heavily involved in the Haiti relief effort as a volunteer.

After donating $26 to FreeGeek to honor Amy's 26th birthday, I went poking around Causes to see if I could install the application. This is a good way to avoid application fatique and a great way to build interest in the application. I think this is application might just be a winner: It meshes with Facebook culture.

Prior to Haiti's record online giving, December 31, 2009 saw more than $19 million dollars given online in one day. Many nonprofits not only accepted unprecedented mobile gifts from text messages for Haitian relief efforts, but integration with their online CRM system allowed them to respond and begin to build lasting donor relationships.

There's one woman who -- I think it was in Austin, Texas -- she collected an entire container load full of things for an orphanage in Haiti, using Freecycle.
