Our Time (Facebook) is a nonprofit dedicated to youth empowerment through the voting process. As more tablets and smartphones are making their way into the classroom, it makes sense that there are a number of apps aimed at helping young people with their education and job preparedness.

One of the nonprofits that inspires me locally here in Santa Cruz is a youth empowerment and food justice organization called "Food, What!?" FoodWhat's staff and teens have taught me a lot about what it really means to be relevant to people who are often overlooked or ignored. FoodWhat empowers teens to change their lives through farming and food justice. Today, there are thirty kids fidgeting in a classroom, talking to their friends, messing with their phones.
