The Local Voices Network (LVN), developed by the nonprofit Cortico in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab , is bringing people together to share their perspectives with each other and with a small electronic “digital hearth” that records their every word. Their next launches will be in Massachusetts and Alabama this year.—Julie

Some major victories were also won on both the local and federal levels in getting government recognition and support around digital access. Our seventh cohort includes 15 Fellows from around the country : Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.

The National Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster have engaged (and we are standing up a site for their work in Alabama), as are the members of the Coordinated Assistance Network. Friends and family can find one another at Safe and Well , and can check the status of local shelters here.

Ida is expected to make landfall on the Gulf Coast near the Alabama/Florida border late Monday or early Tuesday. We need volunteers to review the wiki section by section and make sure that there are resources collected for Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Other local businesses, too, have demonstrated their support for the missions of both Dallas Animal Services and the FODAS. Fortunately, corporate partners play a key role in supporting the shelter during times like these. PetSmart hosted a series of “Pup-up” adoption events in their stores to help shelter animals get exposure and adopted.

As an alternative, voters can always use our 50 state map to find their state’s official poll finder tool or the phone number for their local election office. 45 states have online registration lookup tools, and calling your local election office is always an option (again, use our 50 state map to get links and numbers).

It started in earnest about 4 pm and we watched the local weather broadcast until nearly midnight, with one tornado warning after another. Our local rescue squad mobilized immediately and drove an hour south to help one of the hardest hit areas in Tennessee. Church groups are collecting supplies and driving to Alabama to help.
