TechSoup's partner in Africa, SANGONeT , has compiled case studies and profiles of the South African nonprofits and charities they serve. The goal of these case studies is to raise awareness of the impact these nonprofits are making in South Africa. The organization focuses particularly on women and students in rural areas.

I am very excited about upcoming peer learning projects that I’m working on in 2012, including several for Packard grantees in India, Pakistan, and Africa as well as the e-Mediat project in the Middle East. They gave the students tests based on content and scored them. Illustration by Beth Kanter.

Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. FORGE serves 60,000 refugees in three different refugee camps in Southern Africa, and is an official operating partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR ).

That said, in 2012 I had the opportunity to travel to Africa and Asia and from those travel experiences three themes emerged that inspired the selection of this year’s nonprofits: 1) Women’s and girls empowerment; 2) Conservation of wildlife and wild lands; and 3) Access to medical care. We’re a former grantee and we hope that our work and Gates funding priorities coincide again in the future. I started doing this back in 2007 , when we won our first big federal contract for Bookshare, to take it from 3,000 students back then to more than 350,000 students now. Student privacy.
