NTEN member and nonprofit communications expert Kivi Leroux Miller just released the 2012 Nonprofit Communications Trends Report , based on a survey of over 1200 participants at the end of 2011. Here are some of findings that stood out: 78% of respondents planned to email their typical supporters at least monthly in 2012.

Nonprofits saw a 264% growth in Twitter followers in 2012. 36% of people surveyed “unliked” a nonprofit on Facebook because it only posted about donating. 67% of people surveyed “like” a nonprofit on Facebook because they want to show their friends that they support a cause.

People donated more money to charity in 2012 than in 2011, according to a Blackbaud survey , where over 4200 donors from the US, the UK, and Australia responded to a variety of questions about their donation habits to nonprofits. one-time donations increased from 2011 to 2012. The survey had 6,522 Millennials complete the survey from January 1 - January 31, 2012. 41% of Millennials plan to volunteer in 2012. Email still matters.

Google analyzed donation-related searches, finding and increase of 30% from August 2012 to September 2012, according to a study conducted by Google and Millward Brown Digital. 25% of respondents made a donation via a mobile device. 79% of donors were influenced by an online video ad. 57% donated after seeing a video.
