Nonprofit Tech 2.0 Launches Mobile Website
Designed in Dreamweaver and updated weekly, Nonprofit Tech 2.0 has launched a mobile Website for those who like to read Nonprofit Tech 2.0 on the go. The URL is:
The design is intentionally very simple so it’s easy to read on smartphones and mobile phones. The mobile web’s growth is exploding as well as the use of social networking sites on the mobile devices. That said, I am firm believer that the mobile web is the next frontier in nonprofit communications.
The new site features blog posts relative to mobile technology for nonprofits, a featured nonprofit mobile Website that will change monthly, links to the “NonprofitOrgs” profiles on the mobile versions of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, etc, and prompts readers to subscribe to receive text alerts from Nonprofit Tech 2.0. Currently, 4.1 billion text messages are now sent daily, but few of those are coming from nonprofits. Hopefully that will change in 2010!
I would greatly appreciate you checking out the new site on your mobile phone and letting me know how it looks in a comment below. Be sure to let me know what kind of mobile phone your viewing it on. I have been able to view it on mobile phone browsers that range from 170-320 pixels in width, and and on a iPhone. Nothing fancy, but it works! Feedback? Suggestions?

Overall, this is excellent.
Couple of criticisms:
Why are the section headings graphics? It’s unnecessary and breaks most rules on usability. Text with a block level color background would be more effective, and readable, as the text would resize with the user preference and not become pixelated.
Also, you ask your users to install WordPress for their iPhone if they want to see the archives, or else visit your regular website. Why not give them the option of multiple platforms?
Most people don’t use iPhones. In fact, most people can’t afford the plan you need for an iPhone.
The largest selling phone platform on the planet in Nokia, which uses Symbian. But the fastest growing platform right now is Google Android. The top of the line phones use Windows Mobile. See what I’m getting at?
My suggestion would be to keep in mind what the market is, offer the comparable platform application download links for the major players, or just load your entire archive onto this mobile site so that you do not need to install anything on your phone, nor leave the website to view older content.

I used an iPhone to view the mobile site. It is very easy to use.

Thanks Miranda. That’s very nice of you. I am still trying to figure out a way to pull in all the Nonprofit Tech 2.0 articles via RSS to the mobile site… in a format that’s just simple text and links (that can be read on a mobile device), but I don’t think that tool exists yet! Thanks again.
how do you look at it on an iPhone? I put the url in Safari, but the .mobi suffix doesn’t work.
Hi… I designed it using Safari for iPhone. You do need to put in the www. I fyou can’t get, let me know!
OK, that worked. I was lazy and didn’t put in the www. i think it looks good, except when I click on one of the flickr icon, it goes to WordPress.
