Announcing… 29 New Favorite Nonprofits for 2012!
January 2, 2012
Every January Nonprofit Tech 2.0 selects a new set of nonprofit avatars to be featured in the Nonprofit Tech 2.0 banner. The selection process is a personal one. I choose nonprofits that in my mind have excelled at social media throughout the previous year and represent causes that I feel are timely for the coming year. This year’s “Favorite Nonprofits” encompass a wide range of issues and organizations that are working to:
- Protect endangered wildlife and animals worldwide: @WildAid, @RhinosIRF, @ALDFAnimalLaw, @AnimalsAsia, @SealRescue, @ApeActionAfrica
- Prevent children from dying from lack of access to clean water or medical care: @Water, @AlexsLemonade
- Empower entrepreneurs at the grassroots to start micro-enterprises: @Kiva, @DarfurStoves
- Hold corporate-owned media accountable to its democratic purpose to educate (not manipulate) the masses: @AccuracyInMedia, @NPR
- Educate about the reality of rampant childhood sexual abuse in America: @Darkness2Light
- Protect the world’s remaining indigenous people: @Survival
- Create an ethical and sustainable food production and distribution system: @SlowFoodUSA, @FarmSanctuary
- Respond rapidly and efficiently to natural and humanitarian crises: @TheIRC, @ShelterBox
- Educate about the realities of climate change in the 21st Century: @TckTckTck
- Prevent students from dropping out of high school and increase literacy: @CISNational, @FirstBook
- Empower girls to empower themselves worldwide: @GirlEffect, @PlanGlobal
- Protect the world’s remaining wild habitats: @Nature_org, @RnfrstAlliance
- Expose racism and teach tolerance in America: @Tolerance_org
- Advocate for the civil rights of the LGBT community: @GLAAD
- Prevent further nuclear proliferation: @Plough_Shares
- Organize workers in America to fight for a living wage: @SEIU
- Safeguard human rights in a politically volatile world: @Amnesty
- Teach human history, art, and culture: @Smithsonian
In addition to increased exposure and promotion, the 2012 Nonprofits will also receive 10% of the proceeds from DIOSA Communications Webinars. That said, cheers to the nonprofits that made the 2012 list and to all nonprofits and nonprofit staff who use the Internet to foster social good.

Outstanding! We’re delighted to be chosen, and even more delighted to be in such amazing company. Now we’ll have to keep our A-game up in 2012.
