Blog Action Day 2010: Water

Amy Sample Ward

This past Sunday was October 10th, 2010 – also know as 101010, the Global Work Day for climate action supported by 350.org and others. More people have access to a cell phone than to a toilet. Today, 2.5 billion people lack access to toilets. This means that sewage spills into rivers and streams, contaminating drinking water and causing disease.

Thoughts from EMSA 2010

NetWits

The week before last, I was lucky enough to attend the Email Marketing Summit Australia 2010 (EMSA). It was fantastic to see mix of new and experienced email marketers, as well as a variety of organisations, both Nonprofit and otherwise. The majority of information was focused on organisations working for profit, but there were a lot of takeaways that are just as relevant in the Nonprofit world as well.

Email Communication in 2010

NetWits

Email is still a powerful way to communicate with your constituents. A report by technology market research firm The Radicati Group estimates that there are 1.4 billion email users in 2009, expected to rise to 1.9 billion by 2013. The same source suggests that some 247 billion emails are sent each day in 2009

Nonprofits of the Month :: July 2010 :: Peak Water

Nonprofit Tech for Good

Peak water is reached when the rate at which water demanded is higher than the rate at which the supply is replenished. By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world population could be under stress conditions. The nonprofits below are committed to reversing this trend through education and conservation in hopes of preventing the looming global water crisis: Twitter: Water.org. Facebook: charity: water.

Nonprofits of the Month :: August 2010 :: Animal Sanctuaries

Nonprofit Tech for Good

Animal sanctuaries exist because there are places, people and things that animals need sanctuary from. Chimps are used in labs for animal testing. Elephants are forced to perform silly tricks through submission in circuses. In many states it is legal to own tigers as pets, but once they grow too large they are often abandoned or sold on the black market. Untold millions of dogs and cat are euthanized each year – a lucky few make it to no-kill sanctuaries.

HOW TO: Launch an iPhone App for Your Nonprofit for $25 a Month [Offer Extended to July 31, 2010]

We saw that with social media in 2008 and 2009, and the same will be true of mobile technology in 2010. In October 2009, I wrote about a build-it-yourself iPhone App development service called SwebApps that was waving set-up fees (normally $400-800) for nonprofits until 12/31/2009. I personally took advantage of the offer and built an App for Nonprofit Tech 2.0.
