Cause Marketing: Selling Products Or Social Good?


Since the days of Edward Bernays , marketing has attempted to convince consumers of their hidden desire to buy products. Many leading members of the cause marketing industry feel that consumers are beginning to demand corporations not only provide quality products but also become responsible members of the community.

There is no spoon


Where we differ is in our approach to pushing the association industry to join in the revolution. Lee White calls it the "the cognitive dissonance that occurs when organizations attempt “community” marketing while operating internally as an authoritarian hierarchy." Or, for association staffers like me, you have to LEARN by DOING.

The study draws on survey data from a sample of 400+ California youth aged 19–22 who were surveyed after the 2008 presidential election. Youth engagement in interest-driven online communities was associated with increased volunteer and charity work and in increased work with others on community issues.
