I spent some time on the phone answering questions, referring resources, and later introduced her to colleagues.
I used the example of recommending a Michaela, relative newcomer to the nonprofit technology field at the time, for a SXSW panel.
So, We heard a lot about the use of crowdsourcing, the latest Twitter apps, and why content strategy is so important. Note from Beth: Every now and then, I get asked when did you first discover the power of the social web? I actually have a repertoire of stories, but one of them is about Michaela Hackner ( Kalabird

I normally try to leave politics and religion out of my work with nonprofits, but this time I need to make an exception. In just that short time it has become abundantly clear that I have been living and working in social networking bubble of nice, friendly, supportive nonprofit folks. You’ll have to deal with them maybe 2-3 times a year. A month ago I launched a Facebook Page called Accomplishments of President Barack Obama .

We're often asked about how to set up a Twitter account for an organization, when it's likely that more than one staffer will be tweeting. For the website link field of the profile, create a Twitter landing page which says, "Welcome to the Twitter page for YAP! Use a multiple account Twitter client to manage your accounts. Why? Here's a quick four-step rundown of what we would do. This isn't the only way, of course.

This morning I randomly selected 10 nonprofits on Twitter and viewed their “Favorites”. At @ NonprofitOrgs , I started using “Favorites” regularly a few months ago and it is has made managing the chaos of Twitter (which I love) a little more organized and strategic. Here’s three ways to use the Favorite function on Twitter:
Eight of those had never Favorited a Tweet, and the other two had Favorited a couple of Tweets, but more than three months ago. 1) Favorite Tweets you want to ReTweet in the future.

This was a follow-up from this post where I laid out 4 step for setting up an organizational Twitter account. Twitter can be a great space for building community around your membership-based organization, whether you work for a professional society, trade association or a cause-related nonprofit. Here's a quick eight-step rundown of how to set up a Twitter account for your ".org". (Image by Maggi_94) Here's a repost of my TwiTip Guest post from 4/11/09 . You've already read this, but I'm including it here for archival purposes.

If used correctly, #hashtags can be very useful to nonprofits on Twitter. The problem is that there so many hashtags floating around on Twitter, that’s it tough to keep track of which hashtags work best and reach the most individuals.
When Twitter first launched it did not have a search function, so to be able to have conversations via Tweets beyond Replies, hashtags were necessary. Hashtags allow your organization to participate and inspire conversations (and in the process get new followers) and organize the Twitterverse around campaigns ( #climatechange ) and events ( #openwebawards ).

We're working with one group who had exactly this scenario - a fairly big event coming up quickly, and members asking about their social media presence, and they figured they should just jump in and set up an official Twitter account to see what would happen. In no particular order: - to keep up with things happening around exhibits, and communicate with exhibitors - to be the cool kid - to experiment with a different kind of communication - to find out who uses Twitter within their community - to see if members are interested in using this forum - if it works for meetings/events, could

It got me thinking about managing multiples: multiple twitter accounts, multiple people tweeting from one account, and how do you tweet a network of affiliates or a movement. There are no official rules, although there is some great advice in the O'Reilly Twitter Book on this topic for corporate examples. Will having an personal Twitter account for your organization like having an organizational Last week I wrote a post called " 8 Nonprofit CEOs Who Tweet " and the number quickly grew based on the responses in the comments. You'll need to decide who is doing the Tweeting

I was recently asked to do a quick summary of this post by Guy Kawasaki, "Looking for Mr GoodTweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter" which has been doing the rounds. It's a long post with a bunch of tips, so here's the short version for those of us with many hats and/or short attention spans and/or not much time in the day, etc. Real thought leaders will reply to you if you say something worth replying etc. etc.
