I use a RSS reader and read feeds because it is part of my writing process. Lately, my RSS reading habits have changed. My RSS reading is mostly information gathering or browsing. Photo by Lynetter. Michael Pick recently posted this entertaining how-to video about RSS for some client work he was doing for a social RSS application called " Feed Each Other." His RSS Guide for Beginners is an absolute gem! A must-read for anyone trying to explain what RSS is and why one should use it.

I still use RSS readers, of course, but I'm not necessarily following the same set of blogs in linear way. I don't know if it is over for me, but I haven't been as disciplined lately reading my feeds. I am finding myself keeping up through items shared in google reader or via friendfeed or twitter -- and while I'm writing via Zemanta.

the lastest from Feedburner - the ability to put your log or photo into an RSS widget. Get this widget! You knew I just had to do this. The hardest part was the creating the jpg. That's my Second Life avatar). Downside is that if you put javascript into your post - it doesn't show up.

in the UK, I made a Freudian slip and called RSI - RSS by mistake.). I'm finding that some people's initial reactions to RSS is "OMG, information overload!" I'm discovering that I'm finding RSS so efficient that I find email annoying. I have in the past tried to access email from listservs that had RSS feeds.

This isn't the only widget that uses RSS stream headlines or content from feeds. These include: RSS Scroll Box - allows you to add up 3 RSS feeds that scroll up the page. RSS Feed Widget by MuseStorm - pulls any RSS feed into your blog or web page A quick search on widgetbox and found a few more.

But, none used RSS readers or knew what they were. Not sure if this matches demographic studies of RSS users or not because this group was under 18) They were aware of tagging, but in the sense of how it is used on Facebook - to tag your friends in photographs or notes, etc. No surprise there.

I've been reflecting a lot on my RSS reading habits lately and how I organize (or don't) my RSS feeds in the reader. Just had to blog it! It would make a great presentation slide!

How can you stream and RSS as headline links down your sidebar in blogger? If you want to have a stream a RSS feed as headlines on your side bar in blogger, after you create the javascript, where do you put in the template? This is one of those stupd questions one that reveals your own stupidity. I posted it here.

Amy Gahran has some excellent self-reflections and advice about the way she reads feeds in her RSS reader. In short, ditch the guilt, embrace the serendipity! Like Amy, I've lost count of how many feeds are in my reader(s) - at least 400-500. I don't feel pressured to read everything, I'm a big scanner.

I love ( and hate ) how blogs, rss, tags, and these other tools are so right-brained and being able to indulge in some non-linear thinking. One of the tools that was mentioned was RSS readers. More importantly, they gave me enough incentive to start reading blogs and also had some simple 1-2-3 advice for selecting a RSS reader.

Rumors that Google will close Feedburner are circulating again, but this time there is an option for an RSS hosting service, although not free. And, we know right now they won’t be closing.

More and more people are reading content, your content, via RSS through tools like Google Reader so make it easy to find on every page of your site. Tip : Use Google FeedBurner which will allow people to subscribe via RSS or email. Another Tip : Not sure how to get RSS from the Blackbaud Sphere CMS. Not sure what RSS is?

It's free, but if you want to grab the results in a RSS, it looks like that will be the pro service. Powerful listening is done through Radian 6, but I also have a Ruby Goldberg like set up of RSS feeds from about 25 different sources that search on my name, my blog url, and the various mispellings. I listen in many different ways.

I like the simplicity and it is especially useful for sharing resources as part of a training. One important consideration is that the tool has an export feature so you don’t loose your work. (If they don’t have an export button, many tools do use RSS and you can export your work into Excel.).

For novices just starting to explore social media, I recommend google alerts as the first listening step because they didn't have learn another application (RSS Readers) to get started. I use google alerts, but always wished they had an RSS option. I get way too email that I can barely keep up.

Dipity is a timeline tool that let's you edit a timeline collaboratively or pop in an RSS feed. I put the RSS feed for the WeAreMedia wiki in - and it displays the changes in a timeline. More here. I wish I had known about dipity from the beginning -- gives you a sense of participation.

RSS Feeds: Add an RSS feed to your blog and news sections so people visiting your site can subscribe to your feed and stay updated on your nonprofits latest news. I like Google Feedburner because it gives visitors a choice to subscribe via RSS or email. I have also ranked them from easy to moderate to time consuming.
