The 2020 Global Trends in Giving Survey closed June 1 and the full results will be released September 14 in the third edition of the Global Trends in Giving Report. 7,008 survey respondents from 81 countries indicated in the survey that they had donated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and some characteristics of these donors are listed below.

It’s worth noting that 68% of the COVID-19 donors were female, 31% male. 41% were Baby Boomers, 24% Millennials, 22% Gen X, 11% Matures, and 2% Gen Z.


1) The top three preferred methods of giving are online (80.5%), bank/wire transfer (18.6%), and direct mail/post (14.4%).

2) 53.6% of COVID-19 donors are enrolled in a recurring giving program.

3) 49.7% have donated to a crowdfunding campaign benefiting a nonprofit within the last 12 months.

4) 12.3% have created a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign benefiting a nonprofit within the last 12 months.

5) 20.9% of COVID-19 donors also donated to a nonprofit on #GivingTuesday 2019.

6) 32.6% give to nonprofits located outside of their country of residence. The top three countries are the U.S. (24.9%), Canada (9.7%), and India (4.2%).

7) 66.7% have volunteered for a nonprofit within the last 12 months. 74% donated to the nonprofit that they volunteered for.

8) 32% of COVID-19 donors have donated through Facebook Fundraising Tools. Of those, 88% said they are likely to do it again.

9) 10.7% have donated through Instagram Fundraising Tools. Of those, 93% said they are likely to do it again.

10) 64.8% of COVID-19 donors say that regular email communication about the impact of their donation is most likely to inspire them to give repeatedly to an organization.
