As companies are increasing their focus on doing good , it only makes sense that everywhere you looked at SXSW Interactive this year, people were talking about do-gooding. Twitter’s Evan Williams was expected to talk about a new ad platform during his keynote interview, but instead talked about his company’s values, with #1 being “Be a force for goo

The technology scene today is distinguished by the growing connectivity among devices, mobile phones, the PC, and the browser, which enable people and organizations to access information, communicate, and collaborate in more powerful ways. This convergence is being driven by widespread penetration of mobile devices (up to 4 billion people now have access), advances in software innovation and powerful applications, and the maturation of the internet providing a gateway for "cloud" computing where data and applications sit and run over the web. We're often asked about how to set up a Twitter account for an organization, when it's likely that more than one staffer will be tweeting. So people can find you easily. Be pithy - people like that. For the website link field of the profile, create Here's a quick four-step rundown of what we would do. This isn't the only way, of course.

This morning I randomly selected 10 nonprofits on Twitter and viewed their “Favorites”. At @ NonprofitOrgs , I started using “Favorites” regularly a few months ago and it is has made managing the chaos of Twitter (which I love) a little more organized and strategic. Here’s three ways to use the Favorite function on Twitter:
Eight of those had never Favorited a Tweet, and the other two had Favorited a couple of Tweets, but more than three months ago. 1) Favorite Tweets you want to ReTweet in the future.

This was a follow-up from this post where I laid out 4 step for setting up an organizational Twitter account. Twitter can be a great space for building community around your membership-based organization, whether you work for a professional society, trade association or a cause-related nonprofit. Here's a quick eight-step rundown of how to set up a Twitter account for your ".org". (Image by Maggi_94) Here's a repost of my TwiTip Guest post from 4/11/09 . You've already read this, but I'm including it here for archival purposes.

If used correctly, #hashtags can be very useful to nonprofits on Twitter. The problem is that there so many hashtags floating around on Twitter, that’s it tough to keep track of which hashtags work best and reach the most individuals.
If every one of your tweets has a hashtag, some people will question your intentions for using them. Hashtags allow your organization to participate and inspire conversations (and in the process get new followers) and organize the Twitterverse around campaigns ( #climatechange ) and events ( #openwebawards ). Below I have posted 10 hashtags

We're working with one group who had exactly this scenario - a fairly big event coming up quickly, and members asking about their social media presence, and they figured they should just jump in and set up an official Twitter account to see what would happen. In no particular order: - to keep up with things happening around exhibits, and communicate with exhibitors - to be the cool kid - to experiment with a different kind of communication - to find out who uses Twitter within their community - to see if members are interested in using this forum - if it works for meetings/events, could

It got me thinking about managing multiples: multiple twitter accounts, multiple people tweeting from one account, and how do you tweet a network of affiliates or a movement. There are no official rules, although there is some great advice in the O'Reilly Twitter Book on this topic for corporate examples. Will having an personal Twitter account for your organization like having an Last week I wrote a post called " 8 Nonprofit CEOs Who Tweet " and the number quickly grew based on the responses in the comments. You'll need to decide who is doing the Tweeting for

I was recently asked to do a quick summary of this post by Guy Kawasaki, "Looking for Mr GoodTweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter" which has been doing the rounds. Guy says 1) many will "autofollow" you back; 2) you may learn something, 3) you may want to appear that you "have a clue" when people look at your profile. Follow people you KNOW are thought leaders because you may learn something, It's a long post with a bunch of tips, so here's the short version for those of us with many hats and/or short attention spans and/or not much time in the day, etc. etc.

Over the past few months I have been lucky enough to interview some of the Twitter elite including Guy Kawasaki , Pete Cashmore , Tim O’Reilly , Chris Brogan , Smashing Magazine , Damien Mulley , Chris Coyier , Eoghan McCabe , David Lanham , Paul Boag and Darren Rowse , asking their opinions on the social media scene and getting an insight into how they personally use Twitter.
Well, I did have a little help from Twitter, which allowed me to cut a path directly to the top of the pile and interact with some brilliant minds about the effects of the micro-blogging

The "is Twitter a strategy or tool debate" was fueled as Twitter got lots of attention (and hype ) as part of the coverage of last week's protests in Moldova. Ivan Boothe points out in his post " The Fire and Food: Why There's No Such Thing As A Twitter Revolution ," the real-time use of Twitter as an organizing tool is a not revolution . Twitter has been used during the G20 protests , election monitoring and crowd-sourcing the location of a torch when it was passing through San Francisco. There is an inherent tension between strategy and tactical implementation of using social media to support a campaign's objectives or nonprofit's mission, whether the goal is fundraising, marketing, or taking action.
