When I was looking at nonprofit software vendors at the end of 2005, GetActive didn’t snicker at our ridiculously small budget. It’s far from free, but if it’s a fit they’ll work within an organization’s budget and needs. We’re living proof.

She also has an internal filter that's better than any parental control software. I rely on technology to keep my life organized. And I know there has to be some great apps out there specifically designed to help young adults like her organize and communicate. She refused to see a PG-13 movie until she was actually 13.

This year, there were enough nonprofit organizations already on Common Ground to warrant a session or two aimed at users, rather than just to sell existing Convio clients to the application as was found at previous Summits. But this is simple, included with Salesforce, and doesn't require special software to read/use the data.

Disadvantages: In the past 2 years, Salesforce has introduced more updates that benefit organizations that have a traditional account<->opportunity model than I can count. So once we switch, no more worry about the software becoming outdated. As our organization expands, I’d have to pay for additional licenses.

Salesforce default is to assume nothing, leaving it to the organization to customize things to their liking. That means that the software uploads 20 records, chews on them, uploads the next batch, chews on them, etc. Common Ground takes the framework that Salesforce provides and makes it truly usable for a nonprofit. for donations.

My mantra: if it takes longer to keep my tasks organized than it takes to do the tasks, then it's the wrong solution. I want software that works that way too without my having to fight it. I need more than a simple to-do list or just starring my email, less than a full blown GTD system of complex contexts and next actions.
