We had an all-company movie, The Reckoning during lunch this last week. The movie is excellent: it does a good job of covering the issues around the establishment of the court and its early years including its earliest cases. This was an opportunity to hear about human rights: The Reckoning is about the International Criminal Court.

Although the movie touches on many social justice issues, Iram made it clear that she didn't want to make another documentary about Pakistan. Last night, Virginia and I were in a packed auditorium at Stanford watching a preview screening of a terrific new indie feature film, Josh.

One night they listened to the Fellowship of the Ring movie on the phone until 4 in the morning. A week after one of his best friends died, feeling lonely, and bolstered by how well they worked together and their mutual interest in Bookshare and Tolkien, he impulsively called her. They talked and talked. By October, he declared he loved her.

The event kicks off with a Tuesday night dinner for grantees at Exeter College, which is what Hogwart's (in the Harry Potter movies) was modeled after. The number of Nobel Peace prize winners has been just incredible: I think we had at least three speak at plenaries this year. Jeff has a track record of following through on his ideas.

And though they use the massive sets of data they collect to help create a better experience for their consumers (such as customized ads or tailored movie recommendations), their primary goal is to use what they learn to maximize profits. But can Big Data also create positive social change?

The contention that piracy of movies, music and books is a national security issue that necessitates secrecy is implausible to say the least (but it’s the current Administration excuse). Why have a legislature? Why have public decision-making? Citizen engagement is a core value of the Obama Administration. What makes the ACTA an exception?

Al Gore has been working with Jeff Skoll for years, and their partnership has led to the movie an Inconvenient Truth and now the Alliance for Climate Protection. He pulled stories from his past that were completely on point for an audience of social entrepreneurs (although he's still grappling with the term, I'm sure he has it now).
