However, Google Maps routed me to a point two miles away when I typed 300 Funston into my Android phone's Google Map function. Here's the link as it works right now: 300 Funston - Google Maps , hope they fix it soon. Called a friend at a PC, and they got the same misroute to 116 Sheridan Avenue, San Francisco, California 94129.

If decision makers simply had a map, they could have made better decisions more quickly, more accurately, and with less complication than if they had tried to use crowdsourcing. We don't think that SMS was a very good measure of building damage, relative to the obvious alternative of using a map of building locations.

You can go to a map and see what's already been done in the district. With all the energy around effectiveness and transparency, PWX is a great example of how to operate a network of hundreds of projects in different communities, with the detailed project information available to donors and partners. Apparently this happens a fair amount.

Here's the bottom line: if you have a map of buildings from before the earthquake, you already know more about the likely location of damaged buildings than if you relied on an SMS stream, based on the Haiti data presented.

About halfway to Palo Alto, Jim did a quick calculation with his smartphone using Google Maps: he figured we would run out of juice about at the middle of the Dumbarton Bridge , the southernmost bridge over the San Francisco Bay. I exclaimed, "we can coast home from there!" How much safety margin had the Leaf engineers built in?
