We've been a Google Grant partner for years. The problem of many (most) social sector organizations is outreach (marketing, in business-speak). Google advertising is highly tuned. It's an incredibly effective ad for us on Google: a clickthrough rate on the order of 5%. It's a great deal!

Why We're Blacking Out Sites: PIPA and SOPA

Part of my objective was to show the unintended consequences of Internet censorship bills like SOPA and PIPA (SOPA's Senate buddy bill), responding to alerts from organizations I trust like the Electronic Frontier Foundation. We're not alone: far larger sites like Wikipedia and Google and hundreds of others (if not thousands).

Compare that to Google Book Search, with more than 25,000 publishers signed up for their commercial program in a similar time period. Google, who has been sued by the same publishers for alleged copyright violations. We now have global permissions for around 8,000 copyrighted books out of our 70,000. •
