In a couple of cases, I opened this up broadly to my Facebook or Twitter network, for example, when I was looking for a generic shot of visitors checking out a photography exhibition. The outline is an outlier because it was used as a planning tool and enjoyed lots of discussion among people who were interested in the book in its earliest phases. This is the first of a four-part series on the behind-the-scenes experience of writing The Participatory Museum . This week, we'll look at the overview of the process of the creation of the book and some overall statistics for user participation.

What a miraculous little tool of technology. Now eight months later, with the exception of Facebook, Twitter and Pandora, I rarely use Apps on my iPhone anymore. Believe it or not, Facebook Mobile is now growing faster than Facebook Desktop!
Facebook of course is one step ahead with Facebook Touch . When I bought my first iPhone in June 2009 I was absolutely blown away. Love my iPhone.

If you haven't heard of Facebook, I'm sorry to break it to you, but you are living under a rock. However, if you haven't seen a use for Facebook for your organization, then you are not alone, and we are here to help. Many people view online social networking tools, such as Facebook , LinkedIn , and Myspace as time-draining distractions. This morning the Washington Post published an article titled " To Nonprofits Seeking Cash, Facebook App Isn't So Green: Though Popular, 'Causes' Ineffective for Fundraising ." Proclaiming that fundraising using Facebook Causes was a failure based on a calculation of dollars per donor.
Back in 2007, when Facebook opened it doors to people older than college students and nonprofits started the early Flickr Photo by Vaguely Artistic
When I first saw the article, I thought it was the article from a year ago where they said basically the same thing. Proclaiming

I like Facebook. But I am a fan of my favorite nonprofits on Facebook. have donated to nonprofits that I have seen on Facebook (on their website). do like Facebook and I like nonprofits on Facebook.
But I must confess that I sometimes think that Facebook is overrated as a communications and community-building tool. Mostly to stay in touch with close friends. It’s great for that.

If questions from our readers are any indication, there’s still a lot of confusion about the differences between Facebook’s Profiles, Fan Pages, and Groups — and which of these might best suit a nonprofit’s social-networking plan. Facebook was conceived as a social network of individuals, so everything starts with the individual Profile. Every member Let’s take a closer look. And the two main tools...(

common mistake is to assume that because a person is “young” and has been using Facebook for years to stay in touch with friends and family, then they must be good at using social media for branding an organization. What websites were your visitors on right before they visited your site [Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace]? Are Last week a study came out that said small to medium sized nonprofits were not gaining much from using social media. I

Grassroots Enterprise recently launched “Actions” on Facebook that allows nonprofit organizations' supporters to take action and send a letter to their members of Congress without ever leaving Facebook —and without installing an app. Enable Tell-A-Facebook Friend functionality

O ne of the most effective social media tools available to small non-profits are embeddable widgets. Chris Garrett and I mentioned during the Philanthropy.com chat , it’s best to ask visitors to your Facebook page for specific and doable actions. Now, the problem with Facebook is that it’s pretty confusing to use for a lot of folks. Youtube videos, fundraising widgets and social networking widgets can empower your fans to take action for your non-profit.
Microactions are key
