Summary: This spring marks a full year since COVID-19 brought devastating impacts to our country and our sector. As we move forward into year two of the pandemic, we’re reconvening our panel from December’s State of the Sector webinar to take a pulse check on how the sector is holding up and managing through. In this session, Imagine Canada’s President & CEO, Bruce MacDonald, will facilitate a panel discussion featuring Mary Barroll of CharityVillage, Paul Nazareth of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP)Paula Speevak of Volunteer Canada, and Sandra Sualim from AFP Toronto and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Foundation. Panelists will discuss how the implications of 2020 have carried over into 2021 as well as new trends that have developed this year, while looking ahead to what a post-pandemic recovery might mean.

About the presenters

Bruce MacDonald, President & CEO of Imagine Canada
When carnivals and social good combined, it pointed to a path and for 30 years Bruce has been walking that route. From working for organizations that provide services to young people, older adults, persons with disabilities, community service clubs and sports and recreation groups, Bruce’s experiences have led him to Imagine Canada, where he is President & CEO. Prior to that, he was the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, where he participated in a collective effort to bring mentoring programs to kids. Bruce holds a Bachelor Degree in Sports Administration from Laurentian University, a Masters in Management in the Voluntary Sector from McGill University and a record in the Guinness Book of World Records. In early 2019, Bruce was appointed Co-Chair of the Permanent Advisory Committee on the Charitable Sector working with the federal government.

Mary Barroll, VP, Media Affairs at CharityVillage, President of TalentEgg

Paul Nazareth, Vice President, Education & Development at the Canadian Association of Gift Planners
Paul Nazareth has worked in Canada’s social-profit sector for the past 20 years. Currently Vice President, Education & Development at the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, he was most recently was VP at the charity CanadaHelps. He has been a philanthropic advisor with a national bank and has worked for charities large and small. Paul is currently on the board of several charities, is Chair of the Advisory Board at the Humber College postgraduate fundraising program, on the Advisory Council of the Carleton University Masters in Nonprofit Leadership program, a speaker in every Province with the Association of Fundraising Professionals, lead faculty Knowledge Bureau for the new Master Financial Advisor in Philanthropy designation as well as tax and advisor communities like Advocis, CPA and Estate Planning Councils. Paul writes on philanthropy for a variety of publications as well as appearing on national radio and television to speak about creating a personal legacy through charity.

Paula Speevak, President & CEO of Volunteer Canada
Paula Speevak, President & CEO, joined Volunteer Canada after serving as the Managing Director of Carleton University’s Centre for Voluntary Sector Research and Development. At Carleton, in the School of Public Policy and Administration, she taught a graduate course in Nonprofit Management, and at the University of Ottawa she taught undergraduate courses in Governance in the Voluntary Sector and Community Service-Learning. Prior to her focus on applied research, Paula enjoyed a 24-year career as a practitioner and senior manager in the non-profit and voluntary sector in both institutional and community-based settings, in Montréal, Ottawa and on pan-Canadian initiatives. She holds a Master of Management Degree from McGill University in the McGill-McConnell Program for National Voluntary Sector Leaders.

Sandra Sualim, CFRE Executive Director, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Foundation
Inspired by what’s possible when challenges are looked at through different lenses, Sandra found her natural fit to be in bringing awareness to the betterment of the lives of kids. As a fundraising professional, she has raised millions of dollars in her career and helped to draw attention to countless causes to improve the lives of youth. She currently serves as Executive Director of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Foundation, the largest child and youth focused nonprofit in Canada. Prior to her role at Boys and Girls Clubs, Sandra was the Manager, Leadership Giving at SickKids Foundation. The first thing people notice when they meet Sandra is her passion for the positive. She helps find a positive angle to any fundraising challenge that is presented. Sandra is a frequent guest speaker on the topic of effective and authentic relationship building as it pertains to fundraising and communications in general. She is an active volunteer and serves on the boards of several organizations. Sandra graduated from the University of Toronto in 2005 with a Honours Bachelor of Arts, and holds an advanced Diploma from the University of Victoria, British Columbia in Public Relations. It doesn’t stop there! In her spare time she can be found spending her time writing children’s stories, participating in artistic endeavours, actively participating in the lives of her three children, and even sporting a pair of ice skates at the hockey rink.
