Your Nonprofit’s Facebook Posts Are Likely Not Appearing on News Feeds Anymore

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been close to 10 years since Facebook first introduced the News Feed. And since then, Facebook has implemented over 30 major algorithm changes to determine what is prioritized on your Facebook News Feed.

The most recent update this past June seemed like the biggest blow to nonprofits, as it was announced they would prioritize News Feeds to show posts from friends and family and less from pages. This just further emphasizes the need to focus on peer-to-peer engagement and mobilizing your biggest supporters to share your nonprofit’s content.

However, fear not, there is one “easy” way to keep your nonprofit’s Facebook posts prominent on your supporters’ News Feeds.

You can ask your supporters to update their News Feed page preference by following 2 steps:

  1.    Visit your nonprofit’s Facebook page
  2.     If they’ve already “Liked” your page, hover over the RSS button and check off the “See First” option. (They have to “Like” your page before they can check “See First.”)

Bonus Tip:

Your followers can also opt-in to receiving notifications every time you post on your nonprofit’s Facebook page. They just need to check off “All On” for Notifications under the same section.

This 2-step instruction is the easy part. The hard part is getting communications together and actually getting your followers to go through with the process.

I recommend making this part of your regular communications as a best practice, just as you would inform people to add your nonprofit’s email into their address book to ensure that it doesn’t go into Spam. Try and make it a routine every time you get new followers or schedule periodic posts on your social media calendar.

A good first step would be a simple post that includes instructions and an image:

I would love to hear of other creative ways that nonprofits are dealing with these new algorithms. Please share in the comments section below!
