What to Expect from the Summer ’21 Release

What to Expect from the Summer '21 Release

There are several new, exciting tools for Salesforce Administrators in the Salesforce Summer ’21 Release, such as Learning Paths and the Active Licenses tab. Additionally, there are enhancements to allow for easier customization, such as the Dynamic Actions Bar. And, of course, with each new release, there is even more functionality added to Flow Builder. Read on to learn more!

Release Notes Available in Salesforce Help

Note that the location of the release notes is changing. Moving forward, all Salesforce release notes are available on Salesforce Help. With this new format, you can easily browse each release (and past releases!) using the navigation pane on the left. You can even use the search bar and filter by topic. For example, if “Flow” is entered in the search bar, all Flow-related items for the Summer ’21 release would be on display for you to sort through.

Easily Track Active Licenses

Auditing your Salesforce License usage has never been easier, as System Administrators can now track active licenses with the new Active Licenses tab. From the Lightning Usage App, select “Active Licenses” on the left and view a breakdown of the licenses used within the last 30 days. The chart displays the User License by Profile, which will inform whether the organization will need to purchase additional licenses and/or if there may be users who are assigned licenses, permission set licenses, or feature licenses that they no longer need.

Learning Paths Now Generally Available

The onboarding and user training experience is now enhanced with the general release of Learning Paths (formerly In-App Learning). The Learning Paths can be set up with due dates for each learning assignment, and System Admins can create reports and dashboards to track user engagement in the Trailhead and myTrailhead modules. Additionally, Learning Paths can support custom training resources, such as videos and organization-specific documentation, which are all displayed on the Learning Home tab.

Assess Sharing Access from a Record Page

Previously only available in Classic, viewing record access reasons can now be viewed in Lightning Experience. Once you add the “Sharing Hierarchy” button to the page layout, you will be able to see the breakdown of which users can access the record, the reason for access (i.e., Profile, Ownership, Group, Sharing Rule), and the record access. Note that this feature is only available for Accounts, Opportunities, Cases, Contacts, Leads, and custom objects.

Perform Mass Actions in Split View

Quickly work with multiple records at once utilizing mass actions in Split View. This allows for users to apply the same action to Leads, Contacts, or any group of records that they view from a list view. If there is a quick action available on the list view, just select the checkbox next to the records that you want to apply the changes to, and then select the action from the dropdown on the right.

Create Dynamic Actions Bar on Lightning Page (Pilot)

Update your Lightning Page with a Dynamic Actions Bar — allowing you to curate the important actions that you want users to be able to take from the Lightning Page. The Dynamic Actions Bar can be added via the Lightning Page by simply dragging the “Dynamic Actions Bar” Lightning Component onto the canvas, and you can add standard or custom global actions. Like any Lightning Component, you can also filter the bar using custom filter criteria!

Enhancements to Reports & Dashboards

Many Gift Officers and Development Portfolio Managers will be happy to note that you can now update records directly from the report page with in-line editing. Just like in list views, the field updates can be made by selecting the pencil icon on the field all from the report page. Note that this setting needs to be enabled in Setup, Reports and Dashboard Settings by selecting “Enable In-line Editing in Reports.”

Additionally, dashboard charts can be downloaded as an image so that they can easily be included in presentations and embedded into documents.

Even More Flow Builder Updates!

With each new release, we look forward to learning about the upcoming updates to Flow Builder. There are a number of updates to the screen flows, such as the ability to build multicolumn screen flows. The new multicolumn screen flow allows for the drag-and-drop setup and the design of the screen flow is responsive in its design—meaning that when viewed on a mobile device, the columns will stack vertically to support the mobile experience.

Additionally, the Flow Builder now supports default values for screen components. This means preselected values (i.e., picklist options or radio buttons) can now be configured so that the user is presented with a default option at runtime.

Another update to note regarding the Flow Builder includes the ability to use ISCHANGED, ISNEW, and PRIORVALUE in record-triggered flow formulas. Also, troubleshooting flows just became easier with the ability to find failed flows faster from the Failed Flows Interviews list view, updates to read flow error emails more easily with the flow version label in the information line, and also the ability to debug flows from one button.

As with all changes, we recommend that you first install and test this update in a sandbox environment prior to installing into a production org. Also, note that the updates to the NPSP are made from suggestions from community members like you!
