I’m joining a panel to talk about the response for support after the Haiti earthquakes last year. Examples from Haiti. Let’s look at a couple of the main examples from the Haiti earthquake response. Those not in Haiti can also use the application as it aggregates news and actions to take.

So, I figured this would help friends celebrate my birthday with me, but help out a worthy organization, at the same time!

Do they feel that one day Twitter and Facebook are going to bring in the big bucks and build a huge base of activists that will come to your organization’s rescue when you need their help the most? Perhaps around passing one of the most important legislative bills in your organization’s history?

The January 12, 2010 catastrophic earthquake in Haiti showed some of the astonishing potential for volunteer-based digital disaster relief. Online tools like Twitter , Ushahidi , Google Person Finder , CrisisMappers , and the work of nonprofit organizations like Crisis Commons. A great example of crowdsourcing is Voluntweeters.

Also, a credit card is not needed to make the donation as payments are billed directly through the cell phone carrier. It is just important to have the right level of expectation (not every campaign will match the Red Cross's $32 million for earthquake relief in Haiti), and to convey a sense of urgency to prospective donors.

Google and Microsoft sent me mobile phones in response to my complaints about the Apple iPhone in-app donation policy. If you skip that, your mobile tactics won’t yield much impact or learning. What we witnessed over a year ago with SMS donations to the Haiti disaster is not going to be the norm for nonprofits.
