This week has reminded me that the power and benefits of getting communities together in person shouldn't be overlooked. South by Southwest reinforced the true value of connecting like-minded groups in person — particularly in our field. Many of these examples leveraged online network lessons, however, the follow-through and enthusiasm around them was fostered by in-person connections. Note from Beth: Every now and then, I get asked when did you first discover the power of the social web? I actually have a repertoire of stories, but one of them is about Michaela Hackner

Build personal relationships with people first.
This week has reminded me that the power and benefits of getting communities together in person shouldn't be overlooked. SXSW was a total whirlwind filled with some of the biggest thought leaders discussing social media (of course) but also about the power of online fundraising and crowdsourcing. While many nonprofit campaigners didn't make SXSW this year, we at Care2's Frogloop and some of our guest writers attended several sessions.

Last year, I marked the date with the above photo and a post with tips for cultivating bloggers and how it was like a long term relationship. Plus, the person took the time to get to know me over time before asking me for anything. Blogger relations (not to be confused with blogger's relationships

And while the Brain exhibition has some qualities that were significantly improved over other RFID-enabled exhibitions (better scanning of the tags, more content-rich personalized welcome screens, effective timeouts if you walked away, a semi-useful group option to accommodate families), it offered an output mechanism that is dated and downright frustrating: the personal webpage. Many institutions that are pursuing online/onsite experience connections have lighted on the personal webpage as THE way to deliver post-visit experiences. Yesterday, I visited the Experimentarium , a science center just north of Copenhagen in Denmark.

This graphic is a mashup of Priscilla Brisbane's illustration of Levels of Engagement in advocacy campaigns with this blog post from the Social Organization's blog about how how business relationships and how technology helps or hinders. I've been thinking a lot of about in terms of online social networking strategies and person-to-person fundraising techniques.
Chris Brogan tweeted about this blog this morning and I when I read the post it got me thinking. Here's the framework as described by the Social Organization blog: The first stage is the encounter

For nonprofits, that means moving from the transactional to the constant relationships. Further, we also know that to scale, it requires all staff to include social media. As we discovered last week from looking at movement building , relationship building skills are really important. what does this type of relationship building look like in the weeds? Danielle Brigida, NWF Social Media Outreach Coordinator ( @starfocus on Twitter) Note from Beth: In the coming weeks, we're peeking over the shoulder of nonprofit social media practitioners to learn about their work flow and techniques.

Flickr photo by Vidiot : Person Dressed Up Like ATM Machine Maddie Grant from Social Fish sent me a link to their training ' Buzz2009 Social Media for Associations " on July 9th in Washington, DC featuring presenters Guy Kawasaki and Andy Sernovitz. Because I have a relationship with Maddie. It's all about the relationships. She asked me if I would write about it or Tweet it. She included a handy " retweet " link. (I

The session I've been percolating, though, is the one on personal branding which was a debate of sorts (though they both seemed to agree on everything) between Aaron Brazell ( @technosailor ) and Amber Naslund ( @Ambercadabra ). Aaron also posted a follow-up blog post which summarizes his view on the issue of personal branding. Basically, both Aaron and Amber were of the opinion that personal brand should not trump corporate brand, if you work for a company. I was at BlogPotomac last week, and as you'd expect in a room full of bloggers, there were some great roundup posts.

While stuck in O'Hare on Saturday, I wrote a post about personal productivity as related to " email overload " and rounded up some tips. (Written I didn't have the book with me and couldn't quite remember exactly the details, but googled a bit and found this post from her personal blog about productive multi-tasking.

Enjoy! Twitter Makes Relationships Work — Right Now Social networking connects us like never before. This helps individuals, nonprofits, businesses, and governmental agencies form new kinds of relationships. How do we put these relationships to work? I'm really not obsessed with Twitter...well, well, no more than you are at least.

Here's how the Red Cross handbook states it: Step 1: Get Social Media Savvy Initiate personal social media use:
Explore the tools you’d like to adopt by using them in your personal life first. Follow the personal online communications guidelines
Photo by Dietrich I love the Red Cross's approach to scaling its engagement strategy by involving the whole organization - it is spelled out in their strategy handbook and policy guidelines . The first steps are simple once you have policy/philosophy in place and the right mix of bottom up/top down adoption

I believe my new library will help me achieve all three things by prompting me to: - FOCUS my personal learning in social media. - It's been my bible for community and relationship building. 2010, they want to build relationships
with Earlier this month, I participated in a social media library giveaway organized by Steve Cunningham , who like me, loves books. He writes a blog called " Read It To Me " that summarizes business books and also hosts Webinars with authors.
