This panel will discuss several case studies showing successful fundraising strategies that incorporate Social Media sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. 2009 Iran Election: Women's Revolution? SXSW is just around the corner. For five days nonprofit campaigners, techies, and social media enthusiasts will gather for one of the largest and most anticipated conferences of the year.

That ethos continued until the last three years or so with issues in Burma, Iran, and China. In Iran we’ve seen it used to get out information and resist censorship but have also seen it used by the government to alter a mobile phone system and monitoring calls.

Social Networks Spread Iranian Defiance Online - NYTimes.com - Watching the #IranElection hashtag stream on Twitter, more and more videos on YouTube and the BBC, and the way citizens create and the global networks share updates about the reality of post-election mayhem in Iran has distracted me from work and ignited many conversations with friends about both what we've seen or read so far each day and what the power of social media has unlocked. Digital Protests This session will explore the role that social media plays in protests, through the lens of recent events like Iran and the American health care debate. The panel will cover the various tools (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook) that are being used to elevate protests, examine the benefits and drawbacks of the internet's involvement and whether social media makes protests more or less efficient, and discuss the issue of authenticity in information dissemination. The other most compelling presentation of the conference was by Michael Wesch , from Kansas State, who talked about how YouTube and online video is shaping our notions of self and identity, allowing for new possibilities of connection and community. Activist Internet usage trends on Twitter show the consistency and growth of the Iran Election movement
If Five years ago, CNN and 24-hour news channels and personal blogs captured US citizen dissent at the 2004 Presidential election results (or lack thereof). In 2008 TwitterVoteReport attempted to provide real-time election monitoring as US citizens posted voting experiences to their Twitter feeds.
