When disaster strikes, we want information as soon as possible and we want to help just as quickly. Since then, the platform (which is open source ) has been modified for use in South Africa (mapping xenophobic violence), DR Congo , Vote Report India (to monitor the recent local elections) and more.
Immediately The Red Cross wasn't just taking in mobile donations, it was leveraging the power of the web for information distribution, as well -- between those following Amy Sample Ward, NetSquared

We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families Gourevich’s book on the 1994 genocide goes so far beyond just a history, it almost feels timeless. This half-hour is amazing–take the time to watch it to see just how attainable conquering AIDS in Africa really is.

But, what happens after doctors in Africa rave about how successful this or that invention are in their hospital? Although our social enterprise skills are strong, our specialty has been social applications of information technology. New ideas for Benetech projects come to us from interesting people all the time. The challenges that people bring are rarely technology problems: they are market problems.

This morning I had the pleasure (and some anxiety, to be honest) of presenting to the SANGONeT Conference taking place this week and next in South Africa. I also use a story of a friend and colleague, Leah Williams , to help highlight the role individuals play in moving and informing the social media strategy and practice of their organizations (her story of discovering social media tools on her own and applying her knowledge and experiences to social media application for the Women’s Resource Center ).
My presentation includes some brief highlights from research done in the US and the UK around social media use by nonprofit organizations (including the Nonprofit Social Networking Survey and the eCampaigning Report ).

This looks like a fascinating event to take place in South Africa this October: The International Conference on Knowledge Economy . They describe the theme of 'knowledge economy' here: "The emergence of economies based on the production, distribution, use of knowledge and information was charted by the OECD (1996) in the report "The Knowledge Economy". Economies are more and more becoming reliant upon an effective gathering and utilization of knowledge and the creation and sharing of knowledge is rapid in the new economy. KickStart is a nonprofit that develops and markets new technologies in Africa that help local entrepreneurs to establish small businesses. But, in Africa, where we work, there are very, very few jobs in the formal private sector. All of the other people are involved in what we call the informal sector. About three years ago, I watched a fabulous documentary series sponsored by the Skoll Foundation called The New Heroes . They are using FLIP Cameras and Camtasia editing software to product a series of videos of their deep field work in Africa. The video bloggers Marcus Prior their spokesperson from East Africa. This is just one of the many different ways they are using social media for the fight against global hunger which has only intensified with the financial crisis. And, while I'm on the topic of creative ways to support projects in the Africa. Some of the best grassroots fundraising for projects in developing countries take the form of clothing donation campaigns. Last summer, as part of a campaign I did to support the Cambodian bloggers summit, I got many donations of technology t-shirts .
