Mapping
Ushahidi was originally designed as a tool for mapping reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election unrest in 2008. Those not in Haiti can also use the application as it aggregates news and actions to take.
Be The Red Cross wasn't just taking in mobile donations, it was leveraging the power of the web for information distribution, as well -- between those following the news and the organizations, relief workers on the Amy Sample Ward, NetSquared
When When disaster strikes, we want information as soon as possible and we want to help just as quickly.

Probably middle of 2008. was fascinated to find out that the team at HQ is full of fans of the Breaking News Online iPhone app.
Be that pushing real-time updates out to their websites and supporters, consuming updates on breaking news in their sector in real time, or collaborating remotely in real time. The Real-Time Web and Its Future , a new report from ReadWriteWeb , focused on the changing ecosystem of the Web, one that runs in real-time. “For the following report, we interviewed 50 companies, developers and executives building or leveraging real-time Web technology.

Why is there no global search engine for good news?
Bad news happens fast and travels fast, while a good story can take much longer to blossom and bear fruit.
Even the last item on the late evening news - the one that is intended to make us forget the previous 25 minutes of bad news - well, even that has recently dropped off the end of the bulletin. It’s no news to you that the forces of globalization, instantaneous and ubiquitous communications, and unparalleled technological innovation are tearing markets apart, changing global dynamics, and redefining almost every aspect of our lives — but, what may be news is that we “ain’t seen nothing yet.” Meanwhile, “Captain Jack and SkyTeam Traffic Copter” — the old sampling system that had to wait politely for its broadcast time on the six o’clock news — is a relic of the past.
Naming an epoch using the superlative prefix of “post” — as in post-industrial, or post-modern, or the particularly unsatisfying post-millennial — is the one true indicator that we haven’t a clue.

The result of these ad hoc collaborations was a folksonomy of terms of nonprofit technology related news and a community of taggers .
And, of course, one of the community ad hoc collaborations incorporated Digg or a "Digg like" ability to crowdsource news items. These early experiments were about how to crowd source, aggregate, and share nonprofit technology news using web 2.0 Should there be a nonprofit and social change category on Digg? (Digg Digg it here ).
