President’s Update Fall 2011 Don’t be surprised, but we’re picking up the pace of change at Benetech! We also want to enable effective information sharing among agencies about what does and doesn’t work. In September 2011, the Authors Guild sued the HathiTrust, alleging massive copyright violations. These image files contain information, such as pictures, charts, diagrams, and the layout of the text on the printed page that cannot be converted to text or speech. None of this is captured by the HDL’s text?

To that end, we need to turn inaccessible images, such as equations in a digital math book, into machine-readable information. One of our goals is to lower the cost of making an image accessible by at least a factor of ten. Furthermore, the legality of digital fair use continues to be challenged.
