April’s theme is Earth Day Everyday. The United States makes up 5% of the world’s population, but consumes 25% of the world’s resources. And though it is sometimes not easy to admit or accept, our lifestyle left unchanged will have detrimental effects on our national security, our economy, our planet and all its inhabitants.
Earth Day 2010 marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day held each year on April 22. More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world. You can start your Earth Day activities by friending, following and fanning the nonprofits below that are working everyday to help America becomes a more conscious, more sustainable society. ReStore’s work in partnership with their Habitat for Humanity affiliates, keeping building materials out of landfills by taking them as donations and then selling them at low prices. Those materials get reused, people have an affordable option to get the materials they need, and Habitat gets the profits to build more affordable housing. Everyone wins!
