Since 2010 was an abnormal year for online giving - due to the wave of offerings for Haiti’s earthquake relief - many organizations received a gift that year, but never heard back from the donor.

I’m sure the earthquake in Haiti is on all of our minds. None of us can prepare for a tragedy of this magnitude but it’s inspiring to see how we rally around the people of Haiti to help ease their pain. I made an end of the year list of nonprofit organizations that I wanted to support in 2010.

While it does not yet amount to the bulk of fundraising for most nonprofits, online giving grew by 13 percent from 2010 to 2011. The only vertical experiencing a decline from 2010 to 2011 was International Affairs organizations.

The international sector’s online fundraising dropped by 55 percent after the 2010 Haiti earthquake brought in “unprecedented online fundraising levels.”. Our 2011 Online Giving Report showed that January was the slowest month for online earning in all sectors, as it plummeted to only one-fourth of what it was the month before.
