Nonprofits of the Month :: August 2010 :: Animal Sanctuaries
Animal sanctuaries exist because there are places, people and things that animals need sanctuary from. Chimps are used in labs for animal testing. Elephants are forced to perform silly tricks through submission in circuses. In many states it is legal to own tigers as pets, but once they grow too large they are often abandoned or sold on the black market. Untold millions of dogs and cat are euthanized each year – a lucky few make it to no-kill sanctuaries. Factory farming is the cruelest of all.
The nonprofits below work on every one of these issues and provide sanctuary for all kinds of animals in need, and they pretty good at utilizing social media too. Please friend, follow and fan!

It breaks my heart that people can treat animals so poorly. I don’t understand why so many people lack compassion.

Thank you for the post about animal sanctuaries, and for including the link to Tony’s blog, Free Tony The Tiger. July 2010 marked the 10th year Tony has be “on display” at Tiger Truck Stop in Louisiana. The FTTT campaign is committed to relocating Tony to an accredited big cat sanctuary such as Big Cat Rescue in Tampa FL.

There is also a great sanctuary in upstate NY called the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. They use a three tiered approach of: education, rescue, and nutrition. They do a lot of video and photos to illustrate the importance of these three facets. More info at http://casanctuary.org
