Mashups are great. But I think 2009 will see a more refined world of mashups take over. We have seen plenty of mashups where a website is able to push together a mapping tool, some public data, and user-created content like comments. Mashups of applications and spaces, not just information. I love them!

We hope that this will spur development for more social applications and mashups as well as better distribution of these applications worldwide. I’ll be watching the Open Handset Alliance, and wondering when I can replace my Blackberry with an open phone. {

Ushahidi was a NetSquared Mashup Challenge winner in the fabled 2008 Netsquared conference in Santa Clara, California.

The organization got started when a group of Kenyan bloggers led by Erik Hersman began doing online mapping of violence reports after the 2008 Kenyan election. It can inform members of a community of critical information as it happens, and tell an event's story visually with maps, interactive charts, and other visualizations.

One of the best examples of the use of APIs are Google Map mashups. The free sharing of information in ways that allow for new innovation. services, like del.icio.us, google, flickr, and many, many others, and use and manipulate this data to their own ends. But I have a first take.
