According to a study by The Russell Sage Foundation and The Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality, the GFC reduced total giving by 7 percent in 2008 and by another 6.2 percent from 2007 to 2008, and by nearly 32 percent from 2008 to 2009.

Total charitable giving has increased in current dollars in every year since tracking began in 1954 with the exception of three: 1987, 2008, and 2009.

Another very positive sign was that online giving in December 2009 grew 32% compared to December 2008. The analysis also looked at a subset of the same 1,703 nonprofits in 2008 and 2009.
